Let’s Get Creative! Exploring the Whose Land App from TakingITGlobal
This workshop was originally created for ECOO Camp Peterborough and this is also posted on Teach Ontario. We were ambitious in thinking about what we could accomplish in 50 minutes and ended up with some really valuable discussion about how the interactive map and the video land acknowledgements could be used in our schools and classrooms. In many schools, one of the ways that we engage in a process of reconciliation is by honouring the land where we live, work, and learn, in order to understand the truth about its history and its first peoples. Many of us are taking the opportunity to share land acknowledgments as part of school days, assemblies and other community gatherings.
Are you wondering how you might personalize land acknowledgements from scripted messages to more meaningful learning for your students and community? Are you interested in engaging student voice as we acknowledge the truth about our history and honour, protect, and explore our relationship to the land?
In this hands-on session, we’ll explore Whose.land, a free app developed by TakingITGlobal, in partnership with Bold Realities, and Canadian Roots Exchange. This app explores treaty lands all across Canada, and shares unique video acknowledgements by Indigenous youth from a variety of First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities to inspire us all and deepen our understanding. We’ll deconstruct the acknowledgements shared in the app, use the app to answer some of our questions about treaty lands, and get creative and experiment with ways you might bring land acknowledgements to life for your students and school communities in curriculum connected ways!
